Vincentian Academy beats North Catholic 54-50 to win Vincentian's 6th WPIAL Women's Basketball Crown!
The Vincentian Academy girls basketball team pulled off an impressive comeback and defeated North Catholic, 54-50, in the WPIAL Class A championship at Duquesne University's Palumbo Center on Saturday March 3, 2012.
Defending champion North Catholic (20-6) had a 10-point advantage early in the fourth quarter and took a 50-43 lead with three minutes left. But Vincentian (25-1) scored the final 11 points of the game to pull out the win.
Noreen Fischer made a basket and was fouled with 1:50 remaining to bring Vincentian within 50-47. She missed the free throw, but Vincentian got the rebound and Laura Primyon hit a 3-pointer with 1:42 left to tie the game.
After an offensive foul on North Catholic, Abbey Bartoszewicz made one free throw with 55.9 seconds left to give Vincentian its first lead of the game, 51-50. Vincentian freshman Brenna Wise then blocked a North Catholic shot and Ally Bartoszewicz (Abbey's cousin) made one free throw with 22 seconds remaining to make it 52-50.
North Catholic committed a turnover with 12.4 seconds left and Vincentian's Noreen Fischer made two free throws with 10.1 seconds remaining to clinch the win.
Vincentian's 3-point shooting was a key to the victory. The Royals set a WPIAL Class A championship game record with nine 3-pointers, breaking the old record of six. Primyon had four 3-pointers, all in the fourth quarter, and finished with a team-high 13 points. Fischer added 12.
